Why We Built This Resource

When Kory and Johnny started Dads Roofing in 2021, they brought something unusual to roofing: an oil field mindset. As Red Seal Journeyman Boilermakers who'd worked at Suncor, Syncrude, and CNRL's Kearl Lake facility, they were trained to diagnose problems systematically — trace the root cause, not just patch the symptom.

That approach changed how we handle roof problems. A lot of roofers see a leak stain and immediately start tearing off shingles above it. We trace water paths, check flashings, inspect attic ventilation, and figure out why the problem happened before we pick up a tool. In the oil fields, you don't weld a patch on a pipeline without understanding why it failed in the first place. Same principle.

These guides come from real jobs — problems we've diagnosed on roofs in Agassiz, Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, Rosedale, Hope, Mission, and Abbotsford. Every example, every cost range, every tip comes from our direct experience in the Fraser Valley climate.

The Fraser Valley Pattern: Why Our Roofs Suffer

After working on hundreds of roofs between Hope and Abbotsford, we've mapped a pattern that repeats across the entire valley. The Fraser Valley isn't just "rainy" — it's a specific combination of conditions that attacks roofs from multiple angles at once:

Relentless Moisture

170+ cm of rain annually. Roofs in Agassiz and Harrison see even more thanks to orographic lift from the mountains. Shingles rarely fully dry from October through April.

Temperature Extremes

Summer highs above 35°C, winter lows below -15°C. That 50-degree swing creates thermal expansion and contraction stress that loosens fasteners and cracks sealant strips.

Outflow Wind Events

Fraser Canyon funnels arctic air at 80-120+ km/h through Hope, Agassiz, and Chilliwack. We've seen entire ridgecaps torn off in a single outflow event — usually in November or January.

Biological Growth Season

Mild winters mean moss never fully dies back. North-facing roofs in shaded lots can develop 2+ inches of moss in a single year. We've seen roofs in Rosedale where moss lifted shingles completely off the deck.

Our Problem-Solving Guides

Roof Leak Detection & Repair

Water travels along rafters, down wiring, and across plywood before it drips into your kitchen. We show you how to trace leaks back to the source — and the emergency steps to take tonight if water is coming in now.

  • - Interior and exterior warning signs
  • - Tracing water paths (it's rarely directly above the stain)
  • - Emergency tarping and temporary repairs
  • - Permanent fixes for valley, chimney, and vent leaks
  • - Filing insurance claims for sudden water damage

Moss & Algae Removal

The Fraser Valley's signature roof problem. We explain why soft-wash is the only safe removal method, how zinc strips prevent regrowth, and what happens if you ignore moss for too long (spoiler: it lifts your shingles right off the deck).

  • - Moss vs algae: which one actually damages your roof
  • - Why pressure washing voids your warranty
  • - Soft-wash chemical treatment process
  • - Prevention: zinc strips and algae-resistant shingles
  • - Cost breakdown for professional removal

Wind & Hail Damage Assessment

Fraser Canyon outflow winds are no joke — we've repaired hundreds of wind-damaged roofs in Agassiz and Chilliwack after major events. Learn to spot damage, document it properly, and navigate the insurance claims process with confidence.

  • - Subtle vs obvious wind damage signs
  • - Hail bruising and granule loss identification
  • - Step-by-step insurance claim filing
  • - Working with adjusters effectively
  • - Prevention: 6-nail pattern and impact-rated shingles

Attic Condensation Solutions

The hidden problem that mimics a leak. Frost on rafters, wet insulation, mold on sheathing — and a lot of homeowners pay for leak repairs they don't need. We explain how to diagnose condensation vs leaks and fix the root cause.

  • - Signs: frost, wet insulation, musty smell, mold
  • - Root causes: ventilation, air leaks, exhaust fans
  • - Condensation vs leak: how to tell the difference
  • - Ventilation upgrades and air sealing solutions
  • - Cost ranges for comprehensive fixes

The Oil Field Approach to Roof Diagnosis

In the oil sands, everything has a procedure. You don't guess — you test, measure, and verify before you act. Kory and Johnny brought that discipline to every roof inspection:

1

Document Before Touching Anything

We photograph every issue from multiple angles before we move a single shingle. This protects the homeowner for insurance claims and gives us a baseline to work from.

2

Trace the Root Cause

A ceiling stain in the bedroom doesn't mean the leak is above the bedroom. Water travels — sometimes 10+ feet along a rafter. We trace the path back to the actual entry point.

3

Fix the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

Slapping sealant on a leaking chimney flashing is a band-aid. If the step flashing was installed wrong, we remove it and do it right — counter-flashing into a reglet cut, sealed with proper masonry caulk.

4

Verify the Fix

We water-test repairs before we pack up. If it leaks during our hose test, we keep working. We stay until the roof is watertight — that's not a marketing line, it's how we operate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common roofing problem in the Fraser Valley?

Moss growth is the single most common roofing problem we see across the Fraser Valley. With 170+ cm of annual rainfall and consistently high humidity, conditions from Agassiz to Abbotsford are ideal for moss to take hold. We've removed moss from over 300 roofs since 2021, and north-facing slopes are almost always affected within 3-5 years of a new roof installation.

How do I know if my roof leak is an emergency?

If water is actively dripping into your living space, you see ceiling bulging or sagging, or there's water near electrical fixtures, treat it as an emergency. Call Dads Roofing at (778) 539-6917 immediately. We offer same-day emergency tarping across the Fraser Valley from Hope to Abbotsford, and we stay until the roof is watertight — we don't leave at 5 PM if the job isn't done.

Can I pressure wash moss off my roof?

Never pressure wash a shingled roof. High-pressure water blasts away the protective granules that shield your shingles from UV damage, effectively cutting your roof's lifespan in half. We use soft-wash chemical treatments that kill moss at the root without damaging shingle surfaces. It costs about the same as pressure washing but won't destroy your roof.

Why does my attic have frost or condensation if my roof isn't leaking?

Attic condensation happens when warm, moist air from your living space rises into a poorly ventilated attic. In Fraser Valley's cold, wet winters, that moisture hits cold roof sheathing and condenses — or freezes into frost. It looks like a leak but has a completely different cause. We diagnose this by checking ventilation ratios, air sealing, and insulation levels. The fix usually involves improving soffit-to-ridge airflow and sealing bathroom exhaust fans that vent into the attic instead of outside.

Does insurance cover storm damage to my roof in BC?

Most BC homeowner policies cover sudden wind and hail damage but not gradual wear or maintenance-related issues like moss damage. We help Fraser Valley homeowners document storm damage properly — photos, measurements, and written assessments that match what adjusters need to see. We've helped dozens of customers in Chilliwack, Agassiz, and Harrison file successful claims after major outflow wind events.
